1080p vs 720p: which should you use?

When the difference is genuinely visible, when it is not, and why 720p is often the better delivery choice even from a 1080p source.

In short

720p has about 44% of 1080p's pixels, so it is roughly half the file. On a phone or in a message window the difference is very hard to see. On a large screen it is obvious. Deliver at what the viewing situation needs.

The case for 720p

Half the size, half the upload time, and half the data for whoever watches it. If the destination is a phone — which for messaging, social feeds and most email attachments it is — you are spending bandwidth on detail nobody will resolve.

It is also the gentler way to hit a size limit. Balanced quality at 720p generally looks better than Smallest file at 1080p for a similar size, because the encoder has enough bits for the pixels it does have.

The case for 1080p

Anything that might go full-screen on a laptop or larger. Anything containing text — a screen recording, a tutorial, a slide — where the whole point is legibility. And anything being uploaded to a platform that will re-encode it, because starting from more detail gives their encoder more to work with.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Upscaling 720p footage to 1080p because a platform lists it as recommended. You get a bigger file with no more detail.
  • Delivering 1080p by default when the video will only ever be watched in a chat thread.
  • Dropping a text-heavy screen recording to 720p to save space. Compress it instead.
