Whichever input you grant access to. Laptops often default to the built-in microphone even when a headset is plugged in.
- The room with it
A microphone records everything reaching it — traffic, fans, keyboards. Distance makes the room louder relative to your voice.
- Nothing leaves the tab
The recording is captured and encoded here, then written to your device. Nothing is uploaded.
Before you press record
Get closer — A hand's width from the microphone. This improves a recording more than any processing afterwards.
Choose a soft room — Carpet, curtains and furniture absorb reflections. A kitchen or a bathroom is the worst choice available.
Silence what hums — Fans, air conditioning and fridges are inaudible to you and obvious in a recording.
Test ten seconds — Play it back on headphones. Level and noise problems are far easier to fix before the take than after.
Length and size

Voice recording is far less demanding than video, so long takes are usually fine.
- Keep the tab in front
Background tabs can be throttled, which risks gaps in a long recording.
- Mono is enough
One voice does not need two channels. Mono halves the size with no loss of anything useful.
Your file, and what the page does
Your file is never uploaded. Voice Recorder reads it into this browser tab and processes it with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly on your own device. There is no upload endpoint in the application and no copy on any server — closing the tab discards it.
That is also why processing takes longer here than on a site that uploads: your device is doing the work rather than a rack of servers. The trade is that the file never leaves it.
What the page does send or fetch

- The first time you use any video or audio tool, the browser downloads the FFmpeg WebAssembly build (~30MB) from the jsDelivr CDN and reuses the cached copy afterwards. That is a file coming to you — no part of your own file is in the request.
- Ads on the page
- The site is funded by advertising, so the page loads Google AdSense. That carries the usual web basics — IP address, browser, referring page — as on any ad-supported site.
- An anonymous usage counter
- When Voice Recorder finishes we record that the tool ran, whether it succeeded and how long it took. No file data, no identifier, no cookie.

Nowhere, until you download it. The audio is held in the page while you record and is written to your downloads folder when you save it. It is not uploaded.
M4A where your browser can write it, WebM or OGG otherwise — all of which play on modern devices. Convert Audio will turn it into MP3 or WAV if you need one of those.
The browser is receiving silence. Check that the right microphone is selected in your system settings, that it is not muted in hardware, and that no other application has exclusive use of it.
There is no fixed limit, but the recording is held in memory until saved, so very long sessions are bounded by what the tab can hold. For anything over an hour, record in parts.
No. This records a microphone. Capturing system sound is a different permission, and on a web page it is only available through screen capture — the Screen Recorder can do it where the browser allows.
