Normalize Audio

Normalize Audio evens out a track's loudness to a consistent target and prevents clipping, using the broadcast-standard EBU R128 loudnorm filter. Pick a preset for streaming, podcasts or broadcast, and export audio that sits at the right level wherever it's played.

What normalising actually does

Raises the whole thing evenly

Normalising finds the loudest point and lifts everything by the same amount so that peak sits where you want it. The balance between quiet and loud passages is unchanged.

It is not compression

If your recording is quiet in some places and loud in others, normalising raises both equally and the unevenness remains. That needs level automation, not normalisation.

Where to aim

  • Podcast / spoken word−16 LUFS

    The widely used target for speech. Loud enough for headphones on a train, with headroom left before clipping.

  • Music for streaming−14 LUFS

    Roughly where the major platforms normalise to. Delivering louder than this achieves nothing — they turn it back down.

  • Peak normalising−1 dBFS

    The simpler approach: raise the highest peak to just below maximum. Leave a decibel of headroom so lossy encoding does not push it into clipping.

Signs you have pushed too far

  • Distortion on the loudest wordsPeaks that exceed maximum are clipped flat, which is heard as a hard crackle. It cannot be removed afterwards.

  • The room comes up with the voiceRaising a quiet recording raises its hiss and air conditioning equally. A quiet clean take normalises well; a quiet noisy one gets louder and noisier.

  • It sounds louder but not clearerLevel is not intelligibility. If the problem is muddiness, an equaliser is the right tool.

This is baked into the export

One-way

The exported file contains the new levels. Anything clipped on the way is permanently flattened — turning it down afterwards does not restore the peaks.

Keep the original

Export to a new file. If the result is wrong, normalising a second time from the source is far better than trying to correct an already-normalised copy.

Your file, and what the page does

Your file is never uploaded. Normalize Audio reads it into this browser tab and processes it with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly on your own device. There is no upload endpoint in the application and no copy on any server — closing the tab discards it.

That is also why processing takes longer here than on a site that uploads: your device is doing the work rather than a rack of servers. The trade is that the file never leaves it.

What the page does send or fetch

The first time you use any video or audio tool, the browser downloads the FFmpeg WebAssembly build (~30MB) from the jsDelivr CDN and reuses the cached copy afterwards. That is a file coming to you — no part of your own file is in the request.
Ads on the page
The site is funded by advertising, so the page loads Google AdSense. That carries the usual web basics — IP address, browser, referring page — as on any ad-supported site.
An anonymous usage counter
When Normalize Audio finishes we record that the tool ran, whether it succeeded and how long it took. No file data, no identifier, no cookie.
