What the gain control does
Every sample is multiplied by the same amount. Unlike normalising, it does not look at the file first — you are stating the change rather than the destination.
+6 dB roughly doubles perceived loudness and −6 dB halves it. +1 dB is a nudge; +20 dB is a different recording.

For matching one clip to another that is almost right already.

About twice as loud. The usual fix for a recording made too far from the microphone.

For music that needs to sit under a voice rather than compete with it.
Signs you have pushed too far
Crackle on the peaks — Gain above what the format can hold clips the waveform flat. Once exported, it is permanent.
Hiss arrives with the signal — Gain is indiscriminate. Room noise, hum and hiss all come up by exactly the same amount as the voice.
You needed more than about +12 dB — That usually means the recording was made far too quietly. Re-recording will beat any amount of gain.
This is baked into the export
Clipping caused by too much gain is written into the file. Reducing the level afterwards leaves the flattened peaks flattened.
Always export a copy, so a second attempt starts from the untouched recording.

Your file, and what the page does
Your file is never uploaded. Adjust Volume reads it into this browser tab and processes it with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly on your own device. There is no upload endpoint in the application and no copy on any server — closing the tab discards it.
That is also why processing takes longer here than on a site that uploads: your device is doing the work rather than a rack of servers. The trade is that the file never leaves it.
What the page does send or fetch

- The first time you use any video or audio tool, the browser downloads the FFmpeg WebAssembly build (~30MB) from the jsDelivr CDN and reuses the cached copy afterwards. That is a file coming to you — no part of your own file is in the request.
- Ads on the page
- The site is funded by advertising, so the page loads Google AdSense. That carries the usual web basics — IP address, browser, referring page — as on any ad-supported site.
- An anonymous usage counter
- When Adjust Volume finishes we record that the tool ran, whether it succeeded and how long it took. No file data, no identifier, no cookie.
