What you can and cannot fix afterwards
Slightly dark footage, a mild colour cast, and flat contrast from overcast light all respond well. There is usually enough information left to lift them.
Blown-out highlights and crushed blacks contain no detail to bring back — the camera never recorded it. Raising exposure on those areas produces grey, not detail.
Sensible starting points
- Indoor and dark
Small exposure lift, then contrast. Expect noise to become more visible as you lift — that is the trade.
- Overcast and flat
Contrast first, a little saturation second. Overcast footage is genuinely low-contrast rather than wrong.
- Mixed lighting
Correct the dominant light source and accept the other. Trying to fix both usually makes skin tones worse.
Signs you have pushed too far
Noise crawls in the shadows — Lifting dark areas amplifies sensor noise, which moves between frames and is far more obvious in video than in a still.
Skies band — Heavy contrast on a gradient produces visible steps, and in motion they shimmer.
It only looks right on one screen — Check on a phone before committing. Video is graded very differently for a bright phone than for a dim laptop.
This is baked into the export
The clip is re-encoded with the adjustment applied, which also costs a generation of compression quality.
Always export a copy. Grading decisions look different the next day.

Your file, and what the page does
Your file is never uploaded. Adjust Video reads it into this browser tab and processes it with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly on your own device. There is no upload endpoint in the application and no copy on any server — closing the tab discards it.
That is also why processing takes longer here than on a site that uploads: your device is doing the work rather than a rack of servers. The trade is that the file never leaves it.
What the page does send or fetch
- The processing engine, once
- The first time you use any video or audio tool, the browser downloads the FFmpeg WebAssembly build (~30MB) from the jsDelivr CDN and reuses the cached copy afterwards. That is a file coming to you — no part of your own file is in the request.
- Ads on the page
- The site is funded by advertising, so the page loads Google AdSense. That carries the usual web basics — IP address, browser, referring page — as on any ad-supported site.
- An anonymous usage counter
- When Adjust Video finishes we record that the tool ran, whether it succeeded and how long it took. No file data, no identifier, no cookie.
