How much smaller can it get?
Start from where the image is going. The right setting is the lowest one nobody notices at that size.

A 4 MB phone photo usually lands near 400 KB. On a screen at normal size the difference is invisible, and it clears every attachment limit.
- Website imagequality 75–80
The common case. Enough headroom that gradients and skin tones stay clean, small enough that the page still loads quickly on mobile data.
- Keep it near-originalquality 90+
For images you will edit again or print. Expect only a modest saving — the last stretch of the curve is where most of the bytes live.
What changes, and what does not
Compression is not resizing. Knowing which one you need saves undoing the wrong thing.
File size, and the fine detail the encoder decides you will not miss. JPEG works by discarding high-frequency information — the first things to go are subtle texture and sharp colour edges.
Pixel dimensions. A 4000 × 3000 photo is still 4000 × 3000 after compressing; it simply takes fewer bytes to describe. If you wanted fewer pixels, that is Resize.
What the quality slider is actually doing
- Quality
Not a percentage of anything. It sets how aggressively detail is discarded, and the scale is not linear — the drop from 100 to 90 costs almost nothing visually and saves a great deal; 50 to 40 saves little and shows.
- Format
WebP typically lands 25–35% smaller than JPEG at a visually equivalent setting. The trade is compatibility with much older software, which for anything web-facing is rarely a real constraint now.

Your file, and what the page does
Your file is never uploaded. Compress Image reads it into this browser tab and processes it with your browser's own Canvas engine on your own device. There is no upload endpoint in the application and no copy on any server — closing the tab discards it.
Because the result is rebuilt from pixels, the source file's EXIF metadata does not survive into it. Camera model, timestamp and any GPS coordinates recorded by your phone are simply not present in the output — a side effect of how canvas encoding works, and a useful one before posting a photo publicly.
What the page does send or fetch

Frequently asked questions
Because PNG is a lossless format — it has no quality setting to adjust, so moving a slider would do nothing. The tool disables it and switches on Convert to WebP instead, which is the only way to make a PNG meaningfully smaller here.
No. The width and height are preserved exactly; only how the pixels are stored changes. If you want fewer pixels rather than a smaller file at the same size, use Resize Image — and for a large saving, doing both is more effective than either alone.
Around 72% is a sensible default for photographs and is what the tool starts at. Between 60% and 80% most people cannot tell the difference from the original at normal viewing size. Below about 50% JPEG artefacts start to show up around edges and in flat areas like skies.
No. A transparent PNG stays transparent, and converting it to WebP keeps the transparency too — WebP supports an alpha channel. Nothing is flattened onto a white background.
No. JPEG and WebP are lossy: the discarded detail is gone from the output and cannot be recovered. Always keep your original, and never repeatedly compress the same file — each pass degrades it further, even at a high quality setting.
Yes, as a side effect. The image is redrawn onto a canvas and re-encoded from the pixels, so EXIF data from the original — including camera details and any GPS coordinates — is not carried into the output. That is often desirable before posting a photo publicly.
