What are you resizing for?
Resizing is decided by where the image is going, not by preference. These are the sizes those destinations actually want.
- Instagram post1080 × 1080
Square. Instagram re-encodes anything larger, so sending more pixels only costs upload time.
- Story or Reel cover1080 × 1920
Full-screen vertical. Keep faces and text away from the top and bottom 250px, where the interface sits.
- YouTube thumbnail1280 × 720
16:9, and under 2 MB. It will be shown as small as 210px wide, so detail below that is wasted.
- Email attachment1600px on the long edge
Comfortably under most 10–25 MB limits while still looking sharp on a laptop screen.
- Website content image1600–2000px wide
Covers most laptop displays at 1× and phones at 2×. Beyond this you are paying bandwidth for pixels nobody sees.
- Print at 300 DPIpixels ÷ 300 = inches
A 3000 × 2400 photo prints well at 10 × 8 inches. Work backwards from the physical size you need.

Should you keep the aspect ratio?
The lock ties width and height together, so changing one recalculates the other.
The default, and right almost every time. The image keeps its proportions, so nothing is stretched — you are only choosing how big it is.
Width and height move independently, which distorts the picture. Worth it only when a form demands exact dimensions and slight distortion is acceptable — a banner slot, say. If the shape is wrong, cropping is the honest fix.
Shrinking and enlarging are not the same operation
The two directions are different operations, and only one of them is safe.
Reducing means discarding pixels, and there is a well-defined right answer for how: each output pixel is averaged from the several input pixels it covers. Nothing is invented, so a downscaled photo stays genuinely sharp.
Enlarging is the opposite problem. There are more output pixels than input ones, so the extra ones are guessed by interpolating between neighbours. That guess is always smooth, which is why an upscaled image looks soft rather than detailed — the information is not in the file. Keep one large master and export smaller copies from it. If you must enlarge, 20% is often unnoticeable; 300% never is.

Your file, and what the page does
Your file is never uploaded. Resize Image reads it into this browser tab and processes it with your browser's own Canvas engine on your own device. There is no upload endpoint in the application and no copy on any server — closing the tab discards it.
Because the result is rebuilt from pixels, the source file's EXIF metadata does not survive into it. Camera model, timestamp and any GPS coordinates recorded by your phone are simply not present in the output — a side effect of how canvas encoding works, and a useful one before posting a photo publicly.
What the page does send or fetch

- The site is funded by advertising, so the page loads Google AdSense. That carries the usual web basics — IP address, browser, referring page — as on any ad-supported site.
- An anonymous usage counter
- When Resize Image finishes we record that the tool ran, whether it succeeded and how long it took. No file data, no identifier, no cookie.
