Which control fixes what you are seeing
Exposure moves everything lighter or darker together. Contrast pushes lights and darks apart. A flat, hazy photo usually needs contrast; a dark one needs exposure.
How intense the colours are. It is the control people reach for first and overdo fastest — small amounts read as vivid, large amounts as artificial.
Sensible starting points
- Underexposed phone photo
Raise exposure slightly, then add a little contrast to recover the punch that lifting flattened.
- Flat, grey, overcast
Contrast first, saturation second and sparingly. Overcast light genuinely is low-contrast, so a little goes a long way.
- Screenshot for a document
Usually needs nothing. Adjusting screenshots tends to make text edges worse rather than better.
Signs you have pushed too far
Skies band into stripes — Heavy contrast on a smooth gradient produces visible steps that no later edit removes.
Skin goes orange — The first casualty of saturation. If faces look sunburnt, the slider has gone too far.
Highlights turn flat white — Pushed past maximum, detail in bright areas is clipped away permanently.
This is baked into the export
Adjustments are written into the exported pixels. Clipped highlights and banded gradients cannot be recovered from the result.
Export to a new file so a second pass starts from the untouched photo rather than from an edit.

Your file, and what the page does
Your file is never uploaded. Adjust Image reads it into this browser tab and processes it with your browser's own Canvas engine on your own device. There is no upload endpoint in the application and no copy on any server — closing the tab discards it.
Because the result is rebuilt from pixels, the source file's EXIF metadata does not survive into it. Camera model, timestamp and any GPS coordinates recorded by your phone are simply not present in the output — a side effect of how canvas encoding works, and a useful one before posting a photo publicly.
What the page does send or fetch

- The site is funded by advertising, so the page loads Google AdSense. That carries the usual web basics — IP address, browser, referring page — as on any ad-supported site.
- An anonymous usage counter
- When Adjust Image finishes we record that the tool ran, whether it succeeded and how long it took. No file data, no identifier, no cookie.
